easyJet to Propose In-flight Weddings

easyJet to Propose In-flight Weddings easyJet is finding out whether its pilots will be allowed to officiate weddings during their cheap flights, according to a report on carrentals.co.uk. They are thinking that an officiating pilot could hand over control of the flight to a co-pilot for the duration of the ceremony.

The idea behind the unusual scheme is that it would save time for busy working couples in that they could get married on the way to their honeymoon destination. It was originally inspired by growing numbers of passengers stating that they dreamt of “getting married above the clouds”.

General manager for easyJet Paul Simmons said, according to a report in The Guardian: “We’re excited about these plans. If there is the opportunity, our pilots could be marrying couples in the air. Future brides and grooms can say ‘I will’ on the flight from London Gatwick to Olbia, on Sardinia, for example. After their marriage at a height of 30,000 feet they then can go directly on their honeymoon.”

However, easyJet may find legal obstacles in its way, as there is a UK regulation that weddings should take place in a “non-movable permanent structure with a local council registrar officiating or a minister of religion”.

This new way to tie the knot is an innovation on the now popular weddings on board some cruise ships where couples can be married by the captain on the way to an exotic honeymoon destination. It is also possible to get married at the port and enjoy a big family wedding party before setting off and being waved bon voyage by well-wishing relatives and friends.
