Virgin Golf Event to Promote Sports Travel
The first ever Virgin International Golf event has taken place in the UK, and saw teams from Europe, China, South Africa, the USA and Japan take part.
The event, which is part of Virgin's push to become more involved in sporting travel, was a 36-hole team championship. The first day took place at the London Club, which is near Brands Hatch racing circuit, and Ireland took an early lead in the competition, gaining 102 Stableford points.
All the teams were put up at the prestigious Royal Garden Hotel Kensington in London and coached to the venues for the competition. The second day took place at the Stoke Park golf course, which is close to Stoke Poges, and teams were given a masterclass by ex-pro and Sky commentator Ross McFarlane before going out to compete.
The teams from England, China and Ireland were within three points of each other at the close of play, but the English team emerged as the victors at the end of the championship. Paul Wait of Virgin Atlantic handed over the trophy at the celebratory dinner, and was hopeful the event would become a regular occasion.
"We have been working on this concept for some time as an extension of our well established Champion of Champions event held here in England," said Mr Wait. "At Virgin we have tried and succeeded in working with the grass roots of sports. In golf we work with the PGA and club professionals making sure that when they think of flights the first thought is to travel with us."
"This week's event extends that concept across our international network and I am delighted that we have eight teams from around the globe who have competed for what we hope will be a very longstanding occasion."
Golf holidays have become increasingly popular in the UK and around the world. USA holidays offer some of the most spectacular courses and give UK holidaymakers the opportunity to practice their drive while enjoying their time off.
