Turkey Holidays as Expensive as Spain
Holidays to Turkey have tumbled down the list of the cheapest holidays abroad according to the new Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer.
Spain meanwhile has flourished, despite suffering huge setbacks last year due to a poor euro exchange rate.
Whilst Turkey is certainly perceived to be excellent value for money, holidaymakers could end up spending more money on holiday in Turkey than in the Costas of Spain.
The Post Office revealed that Turkey is now ranked 22 in the list of worldwide destinations, a fall of 14 places. Spain is the cheapest of the eurozone countries, with a drop in prices of 30 per cent for the same items a year ago as surveyed in the table.
In fact, every eurozone country is less expensive than a year ago. For the second year in a row, Hungary is the cheapest holiday destination overall. Thailand is yet again the least expensive of all long-haul countries, with Kenya close behind.
The biggest cost falls are in Bulgaria, Mexico, Mauritius and Barbados. Egypt, Dubai and Jamaica are the countries that will give holidaymakers more change because of the pound being stronger against these currencies in the past twelve months. Turkey and South Africa lead the way in price increases, which have been monitored in eight countries on the list.
Head of travel money at the Post Office, Sarah Munro said: “Judging by the price rises recorded in our latest cost comparison survey, Turkey is unlikely to be the cheap destination that it was just a couple of years ago when the Post Office barometer identified the country as a best buy.”
