Travel Foundation Advises Travellers to Cut Down on Carbon
The Travel Foundation has advised holidaymakers to cut down on carbon whilst abroad.According to the foundation doing the "simplest of things", such as remembering to switch off the heating or air conditioning when leaving the hotel room, can make a difference.
David Weston, spokesperson for The Travel Foundation, said: "Taking off the packaging from goods before you leave home, rather than in the resort, is also beneficial because they are often without recycling facilities.
"Tips like this are small within themselves, but if everybody does them it adds up enormously with helping to reduce wastage and the carbon footprint of tourism in general."
The Co-operative Bank's Ethical Consumer Report for 2007 revealed that money spent with responsible tour operators and environmental tourist attractions has increased by 25 per cent to reach £121 million since 2001.
However, in November last year Travel Supermarket published its Green Travel Index which found that many consumers were hostile to the idea of curbing their holidays abroad in order to protect the environment.
Around 46 per cent of respondents said that they did not feel guilty about flying.
