Tourism Crucial to Future UK Economy
Coinciding with the beginning of British Tourism Week in the UK, new research has flagged tourism as one of the best performing sectors UK economy over the next ten years.
Carried out by Deloitte and Oxford Economics, the latest research has shown that tourism in the UK is currently worth £115 billion, making it the fifth largest industry in Britain.
Holidaymakers and visitors to the UK support 2.6 million jobs and Deloitte predicts that this will increase to 2.9 million jobs by 2020. By the end of 2010, an extra 10,000 jobs are anticipated due to the travel and tourism sector, which equates to one in every 12 jobs being supported by tourism, TravelMole has reported.
In terms of how much travellers to the UK spend, this is expected to nearly double to £31 billion from £16 billion in 2020, increasing 4.4 per cent each year.
Christopher Rodrigues, VisitBritain chairman said: “This research reaffirms the importance of tourism to the British economy. Tourism is a powerful economic driver, and investing in tourism delivers immediate economic benefits – overseas visitors pay around £3 billion a year to the Treasury alone.”
Mr Rodrigues added: “We now have the catalyst of being host to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to revitalise the welcome we offer the world, and I hope this research will underline what an historic opportunity we all have to work for.”
Slower growth is anticipated for domestic spending by UK residents, although there are few signs of Britons giving up their annual holiday abroad with early summer holiday bookings popular this year.
