Spanair Offers New May Flights to Spain
Spanish cheap flights carrier Spanair will soon be introducing flights to Barcelona and Madrid from Birmingham Airport.
Starting in May, Spanair's 168-seat Airbus A320 aircraft will operate on routes with a two-class configuration. The Barcelona flight will be offered four times per week from 20 May, while Madrid will be served three times per week, starting on 25 May.
This will be the first time since October 2008 that flights will be offered from Birmingham Airport to Madrid.
The airline has an existing network of flights across Spain, the Balearics and Canary Islands, and also to North Africa. Once the new flights are implemented, the two cities will be included as starting points for this network. Once passengers reach their destination from Birmingham, Spanair will also offer onward flights from Barcelona and Madrid.
According to Airport CEO Paul Kehoe, Birmingham has an excellent road and rail network, making it easy for passengers to take advantage of the new flights rather than having to travel north to Liverpool or south to the Watford Gap.
This comes at a fortunate time for Birmingham Airport, as bmibaby is due to withdraw its Birmingham-Barcelona service in June.
Mr. Kehoe said: “Although it’s not clear if news like this is the early signs of economic recovering, it certainly demonstrates that the industry has confidence in Birmingham, so we are delighted to have been chosen as the first airport in the UK where Spanair will start operating scheduled flights,” reported TravelMole.com.
