Solo Travellers Should 'Read Up' As Much As Possible

Solo Travellers Should Read Up As Much As Possible Those travelling solo have been advised by responsibletravel.com this week to read up about the location they are visiting as much as possible before they set off.

According to the website, which aims to re-invent the tourism industry for the long-term benefit of local people, the environment and tourists, travellers should learn to "think local" by gaining a knowledge of regional customs and cultures.

Kristina Pentland, communications manager for responsibletravel.com, said: "You should also book just a few places to stay at the start of your trip - this will give you a base and some time from which to get orientated.

"Always leave messages with other travellers or the place you are staying so people know where you are and... have fun!"

She added that holidaymakers and backpackers alike should bear in mind the motto: "travelling with respect earns you respect".

In February 2008, responsibletravel.com reported an 87 per cent, year-on-year increase in the number of people enquiring about community-based Holidays, for the 2006 to 2007 period.
