Singapore Expects Thousands for Youth Games

Singapore Expects Thousands for Youth Games Singapore has been busily preparing for tens of thousands of tourists expected to visit for the Youth Olympic Games.

The event will be one of many Singapore plans to host as its economic recovery takes hold. According to the Singapore Tourism Board, they anticipate about 40,000 guests to visit the island nation.

The Youth Olympic Games, a prestigious event that will be held for the first time ever, will be "just the beginning", according to its tourism experts. The country is aiming to combine sports and tourism to further increase interest in Singapore as a holiday destination.

The games will take place from 15 to 26 August 2010. John Conceicao, the regional director for the Singapore Tourism Board, had high hopes for the sporting future of the country. He said: "Singapore plans to build on its existing calendar of sporting events in the coming years."

Mr Conceicao expected that visitors from "all sectors" would be interested in attending the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games, including business people, families, couples, and single tourists.

The plan will be to establish Singapore as a "hub in Asia" for sporting events. This will be accomplished by working closely with various sporting organisations, according to a report by Essential Travel.

Statistics reported by STR Global appeared to be in favour of these plans, indicating not only a recovery, but also a growth in Singapore's tourism industry. Occupancy rates in hotels across the country have been rising, according to the report.

The future of Singapore's tourist industry will be determined by the country's ability to interest both tourists and sports people in the region as a major host of such events. Certainly, hosting a "world's-first" event such as the Youth Olympics is an innovative and exciting method for trying to achieve that goal.
