Route Variety Encourages Regional Airport Use
Travellers are increasingly choosing regional airports because of the range of destinations they offer, it has emerged.According to representatives of Bristol International Airport, most passengers go for the "local option" when they can, rather than face "overcrowded and congested" London bases.
Bristol's aviation development director, Tony Hallwood, observed: "Destination choice has been the driver behind regional airport growth.
"Given the choice between a direct flight from their regional airport and a journey by road or rail to travel from an overcrowded and congested London airport, most travellers will take the local option."
He pointed out that a reduction in carbon emissions from unnecessary surface journeys in the process is also achieved.
Developing travel trends have also indicated that passengers from outside London are increasingly opting to travel to an international hub to connect to onward services, rather than travel to Heathrow to fly direct.
Bristol International Airport operates routes to Europe, Africa, the US and the Caribbean, with its spokesperson concluding that low cost airlines have also played a role in widening destination choice from regional bases.
