Raffles City Mega Hotel Planned for China
Sustainability is the theme for a brand-new green hotel to be constructed in Hangzhou, China which is hoped to boost the country’s tourism. The structure will be ambitious – rising 60 storeys high and incorporating a mixed use complex as well.
Raffles City is the name of the development, which is expected to be finished in 2012.
Designed by UNStudio, Raffles City is a mixed-use complex including retail spaces, offices, housing and a luxury five-star hotel. Located near the Qiangtan River and the West Lake area, it has been designed by Dutch architect, Ben van Berkel over a site that is 300,000 square metres in size.
It is being billed as a totally green development, in keeping with the trend towards sustainable design for tourism sites. UNStudio is hoping to achieve gold certification for the development, via the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building rating system.
According to the architect “the philosophy behind the Raffles City concept is to integrate mixed use in an urban context, but in such a way as to give this concept a twist; by focusing on where the urban context meets the landscape of the city. In the design of the towers the urban element of the project twists towards the landscape, whilst the landscape aspect, in turn, twists towards the urban context, thereby effecting the incorporation and consolidation of these separate elements in one formal gesture”.
The new development is hoped to attract visitors to the city and offer them a luxury accommodation in the hotel with all amenities on hand to provide an excellent experience for travellers to Hangzhou.
