New Train Links to Heathrow Approved

New Train Links to Heathrow Approved New rail links across the centre of London to Heathrow airport have been approved as part of a £16 billion project.

Under the Crossrail scheme, a high-speed rail line will link Maidenhead and Essex to Heathrow by 2015, making it easier for Holidaymakers jetting off on their Travels to access the airport.

The link is intended to ease pressure on the overloaded Underground network as well as improve links to and from the international airport.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said the project reflected a "tremendous £16 billion internationally recognisable vote of confidence by business and government in London's economic success."

The BBC reported that a third of the project will be funded by the government and the remainder will be financed by borrowing against future fares and a levy on London business rates.

Heathrow serves over 180 destinations in more than 90 countries and around 90 airlines have made the London airport their base.

In 2008, Terminal Five will open at the airport with a "shopping adventure" that will feature flagship "boutique stores" and "fine dining".

Over the coming years every terminal in the airport will be rebuilt, refurbished or redesigned and Heathrow anticipates by 2012 most passengers will travel through terminals that are not yet open.
