New Ryanair Flights from Glasgow Prestwick Airport

New Ryanair Flights from Glasgow Prestwick Airport The economy airline Ryanair yesterday announced it will be introducing new flight routes from Glasgow Prestwick Airport, the Daily Record has reported.

Ryanair intends to introduce five new routes for flights to Spain and the Canaries from the airport. The airline is anticipating this will mean they can fly almost 150,000 more passengers to these destinations.

The five new routes include flights to Alicante, Arrecife (Lanzarote), Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), Palma and Ibiza. Passengers can fly to these destinations from October, with the exception of Ibiza for which flights will begin in March 2010.

Graeme Sweenie of the airport’s owners Infratil Airports said: “It’s fantastic news, particularly when the industry is having a hard time.”

This was undoubtedly good news for the Scottish airport; although it was coupled with Ryanair’s other announcement of flight cutbacks. Ryanair will no longer offer flights to Frankfurt and Stockholm. The airline had previously stopped flights to Krakow and Bournemouth from the airport.

Ken O’Toole, route development director at Ryanair said: “We’ve taken the deliberate view that we want to target the sun market. We have only a limited number of aircraft to do that and something has to give.”

Mr O’Toole commented on the situation at Edinburgh Airport also, which is yet to discover if flight cuts are to be made there by Ryanair. He said an announcement would be made soon and added: “I wouldn’t say you can expect routes to be cut. It’s still a work in progress. But we, and the UK, are in a very difficult position with the increase in Air Passenger Duty and the economic conditions. We are taking appropriate actions to protect ourselves.”
