New Norwegian Base For Ryanair
Ryanair has announced that it is opening its first base in Norway, bringing the total number of bases for the no-frills airline to 37.
As of March 2010, Ryanair will be opening 16 new routes from Oslo Rygge airport. In an investment worth more than $200 million, the carrier will be offering 100 weekly return flights with three aircraft based at the airport.
The new routes are to include Dublin, Paris (Beauvais), Aarhus, Berlin (Schonefeld), Dusseldorf (Weeze), Eindhoven, Gdansk, Krakow, Malaga, Memmingen (Munich West), La Rochelle, Palma, Riga, Wroclaw, Valencia and Venice (Treviso). The move is expected to increase Ryanair’s traffic at the airport to 1.7 million passengers every year.
In Oslo today, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said he was delighted with the new venture. Mr O’Leary said that the low cost airline will help travellers beat the recession and he guaranteed a no fuel surcharge on all of the 22 routes that the hub will host.
The new cheap flights will, “create and sustain 1,700 jobs locally at Oslo Rygge Airport,” Mr O’Leary added.
Equally delighted was the CEO of the airport, Pål F. Tandberg, who announced Ryanair’s intervention as a “great day for our airport and our region as Europe's largest airline opens its first base in Norway.”
He went on to add that he was pleased that Ryanair shared the confidence that he felt in the opportunities for strong market growth at Rygge airport.
In celebration of the announcment, Ryanair has released 250,000 seats at reduced fares for European travel over Christmas.
