McArthurGlen Wins Glasgow Airport Contract
Travellers at Glasgow Airport will soon have a much wider range of shopping to choose from as plans took a step forward today to develop the new retail section of the airport.
McArthurGlen, the outlet mall developer is planning its fist UK airport operation at Glasgow, with similar future schemes across the country.
The developer already has retail operations in three airports on the Continent. The first such design was unveiled last year in Venice at the Marco Polo airport. Other outlets have been developed in Portugal and Dublin. At Glasgow, the developer is planning to create 11 retail units under the same concept as those in Europe.
The deal is the first of its kind for operators BAA. Never before has an outside operator been involved to manage space in a BAA-owned airport.
McArthurGlen is currently involved in negotions with potential retailers to occupy the space. Although not yet revealing any names, the chairman of luxury retail for McArthurGlen, Brian Collie, said: “We are targeting mid-market to high-end fashion brands, sportswear and casual ski-wear”.
According to Mr. Collie, trading in the space is due to start by Christmas 2009. He hoped that the retail shops would entice the 4 million passengers departing through Glasgow Airport per year.
In terms of the future, McArthurGlen is reported to be involved in negotiations with three potential UK airports to further its expansion in the country. In addition, the developer also intends to expand its operations steadily in both the UK and Europe, with the addition of 10 more airports over the three years to come.
