London South Bank Hosts WWI Exhibition

London South Bank Hosts WWI Exhibition A new exhibition of artworks created in response to the First World War has opened at the Gallery@Oxo on London’s South Bank.

The exhibition of works by students at the Central St Martins College of Art and Design came about as a result of a competition organised by the college and the Belgian Tourist Office for Brussels and Wallonia. Students were tasked with creating works in response to the Great War, illustrating what the conflict signified to them and conveying their emotional responses to it.

The exhibition is given additional poignancy as the majority of the contributing students are of a similar age to the soldiers who fought and died in Belgium almost 100 years ago, and is intended to be a bridge between the two generations.

The exhibition, free to visitors, was opened on November 11 by Johan Verbeke, the Belgian Ambassador in London, and can be viewed between 11am and 6pm every day. The exhibition at Gallery@Oxo will remain open until November 21, after which the show will be transferred to the Swiss Cottage Library Gallery, where it will stay on display until December 2.

The exhibition is one of a series of commemorative events being planned in preparation for the upcoming centenaries of the start and end of the First World War in 2014 and 2018. Similar competitions and exhibitions will take place in Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Mons between 2012 and 2013, and a final exhibition featuring the best of all the competitions combined.

The Tourism Flanders-Brussels organisation recently revealed that over £17 million would be invested in projects leading up to the centenaries, including new visitor centres and renovations for existing museums.
