Islamic Cairo Hailed As A Hidden Gem
Islamic Cairo is a "hidden gem" which is often bypassed by tourists from the West focusing on the well-known pyramids and temples, according to one travel commentator.
A world heritage site, Islamic Cairo has a range of beguiling mosques, souks and city walls, said David Shariatmadari, writing for The Guardian.
Many people who travel to Egypt might mistakenly see Cairo as something of a "necessary evil" but should instead take the time to discover its many attractions, the journalist believes.
"Cairo is what it is — a bustling metropolis and the largest city in the Middle East," commented Mr Shariatmadari.
"If that's what you come prepared for," he continued, "there's no reason you won't love it."
According to TourEgypt.net, Cairo has a huge range of interesting sites for the visitor, including ancient temples and tombs, mosques and Christian churches.
Cairo is a "powerful" and "hectic" city, it adds, but also offers great culture through its galleries and music halls.
