Irish Carrier Expands North of the Border
Aer Lingus' first flights from its new Belfast base have taken off.Travellers boarded planes to Amsterdam and Barcelona yesterday morning, while ski-holiday fans are headed for Geneva today.
With various new routes lined up in the coming months, including Heathrow, Malaga, Faro and Rome, the hub is Aer Lingus' first outside the Irish Republic.
The Belfast-to-Heathrow route has proved controversial as the airline's Shannon service to London was scrapped to make way for it.
One couple jetting off to the Spanish sun told the Belfast Telegraph they were lured by the carrier's low prices.
"It only cost £108 for the both of us," remarked Nicola McConnell as she and husband Jack boarded for Barcelona.
"We were looking at the weather on the internet and it's 14 or 15 degrees - that's better than having to bear a miserable five degrees here."
This week marked another significant milestone for the emerald isle's major carrier, with it website celebrating ten million bookings since it began in 2001.
Aer Lingus' flight portfolio covers 95 routes, including destinations in Europe the US.
