Iceland Still a Popular Holiday Destination
A study undertaken by communications company Eye for Image – who are based in Copenhagen, Denmark – has shown that the island country has not been adversely affected by the financial crisis that recently hit the country with its banking systems. It may be an old adage but any publicity, even bad publicity is good publicity as the tourist industry in Iceland is now finding out thanks to the findings of a recent survey.
Last year saw the finances of this country deeply affected by the global economic crisis and many people worldwide who invested in the Icelandic banking system lost substantial amounts of money. These included a number of local authorities within the UK.
The survey which was carried out in February, asked people from Germany, Denmark and the UK about how they felt about Iceland as a tourist destination. What has emerged is that the current financial problems have boosted the country’s image.
“Despite the negative content of a lot of the news, Iceland is very topical at the moment – an opportunity the country needs to seize and direct to its own advantage,” said David Hoskin, a partner at Eye for Image.
The study made a point of not focusing on the fact that because of the collapse in the banking system. Instead it asked respondents to give their own impressions of what was conjured up when the country Iceland, was mentioned.
Interestingly, but hardly surprisingly, 55 per cent of the British contingent who responded thought about nature, when hearing the word Iceland.
