Hotels 'Must take Strategic Approach to Economic Downturn'

Hotels Must take Strategic Approach to Economic Downturn An industry body has urged hotels to make sure they maintain standards while ensuring that prices remain competitive despite difficult financial conditions.

The Hotel Booking Agents' Association stated that there needs to be a coherent strategy if hotels decided to cut rates, according to a report in Travel Weekly.

Speaking at the HBAA's annual forum, chairwoman Sue Burgess said that standards cannot afford to slip as this could have long-term repercussions.

"Companies should be reviewing their strategies and communicating that to every single member of staff," said Catherine Whittle, who represents the hotel partners of HBAA.

She added that lessons had been learnt from the last recession and in the face of increasing costs, dropping rates is not a viable option.

Earlier in the month, The Independent reported that there has been an increase in the number of urban eco-hotels that have opened recently, which the news provider states both save on energy while make no compromises on style.
