Holidaymakers Flying Further
New research has revealed that more than 3.7 million British Holidaymakers flew in excess of 5.5 billion miles on long-haul mini-breaks in 2007.According to Halifax, this group sat on flights lasting at least seven hours for Holidays consisting of less than a week abroad.
The firm noted that one in ten people in the UK are planning to take similar trips this year, representing a 35 per cent increase on the number doing so in 2007.
Paul Birkhead, senior manager for pricing and underwriting at Halifax Travel insurance, said: "Better airline quality, the lure of winter sun, favourable exchange rates and cheaper long-haul flights has created a boom in demand for long-haul mini-breaks."
Many people are now "enduring" long-haul flights simply to get away for the weekend, he added.
Donna Casey, spokesperson for BAA Heathrow, recently said that New York, Los Angeles, Dubai, hong kong and Sydney were among the most popular destinations for long-haul travel.
