Holidaymakers Enjoy Smoke-Free Travels

Holidaymakers Enjoy Smoke-Free Travels Holidaymakers travelling to the continent appreciate being able to dine and socialise in a smoke-free environment, say industry experts.

ASH, a campaigning public health charity, claims that the smoking bans in France and Germany are "welcomed" by non-smoking travellers and have been made a lot "easier" to cope with by the UK's own ban imposed last year.

Research manager for ASH, Amanda Sandford, said: "In France, the stereotypical view that's put out that all French people smoke and that they're all sitting in cafes smoking; [It] is very old fashioned and is not typical now of modern France.

"There's a poll showing over 70 per cent support for the smoking ban in France, just as it's about to be brought in. So if the majority of the population are in support of the legislation, then it's likely that compliance will be high and the problems are going to be very few and far between."

Eight German states, including popular city break destination Berlin, started 2008 by declaring their pubs and restaurants smoke-free.

In France a law forbidding smoking in public places has now been extended to bars, cafes and hotels.

Ms Sandford added that only a "very small minority" of smoking holidaymakers would reconsider travelling to a destination due to its public smoking policy.
