Gap Years 'Give Young People Opportunities'

Gap Years Give Young People Opportunities Having a gap year before going to university or entering employment can help improve a person's CV, one expert has said.

According to Lattitude Global Volunteering, which is a charity specialising in volunteering for 17 to 25-year-olds, going abroad for a year can be a rewarding experience for young people.

Ben Clifton, spokesperson for Lattitude, commented: "If you go into work you are going to be there for the best part of 40 years on average so it's a perfect opportunity, once you have finished at school… to actually take a bit of time out."

He added that gap years "don't have to cost the earth" and noted that there are some charitable organisations out there who are running reasonably priced experiences.

Research by STA Travel has revealed that young people are taking gap years despite the credit crunch, as they view this experience as a wise investment.

Furthermore, the survey found that young people expect to spend between £3,000 and £5,000 on their gap years.
