Galapagos Tourism May Be Suspended

Galapagos Tourism May Be Suspended Ecuador may suspend the issue of tourist permits to the renownedly beautiful Galapagos Islands to prevent what are escalating environmental problems in the area.

The islands are home to scores of unique species and are known to possess a particularly fragile, unusual ecosystem - and moves are afoot to quell a growing set of social issues, including 15,000 people living illegally on the islands, which are compromising this.

President Rafael Correa confirmed: "We are pushing for a series of actions to overcome the huge institutional, environmental and social crises in the islands."

Tourism permits are expected to be among the first things to be compromised in the short term.

Over 20,000 people are known to officially live on the islands, primarily working in the fishing and tourism industries.

Among the animals to be found living on or around the islands are giant tortoises and marine iguanas.
