Desire to Travel in Young 'as Strong as Ever'
Young people still have the travel bug, according to a spokesperson from STA Travel. The representation for STA, which is UK's leading travel company for students and young people, added that gap years are now featuring more prominently on CVs, with volunteer work and learning experiences increasingly valued by employers.
A spokesperson for STA travel said: "The desire of young independent travellers to explore the world is as strong as ever and it's easier now than ever before to plan your trip.
"Round the world tickets are always the most popular but we are seeing a growing demand for bus and rail passes enabling the traveller to see more of a country at their own pace."
According to research published by the Year Out Group in March 2008, almost 39,000 structured gap year placements were taken in 2006, which was 36,000 more than in 2005.
Furthermore, the Training and Development Agency for Schools revealed in January 2007 that 32 per cent of graduates now choose to travel before deciding on a career.
