Brits Prefer New Year City Breaks to Celebrate in Style
New year Holidaymakers are more likely to choose a city break after seeking winter sun during the festive period. That is the conclusion of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), which represents a large proportion of travel agents and tour operators throughout the UK.
Sean Tipton, the organisation's spokesperson, explained that the majority of Brits looking to escape the yuletide season at home look for winter sun or guaranteed snow, although Europe's Christmas markets are also a popular travel choice.
He remarked: "Short city breaks aren't really that popular around Christmas - a lot of people do go to the winter markets in Germany and Eastern Europe but city breaks aren't so popular at this time of year; the weather is not great.
"People going away at Christmas are looking for winter sun or they want to go somewhere they can guarantee snow at Christmas," he continued.
"City breaks are more popular at new year, with people heading off to places that really know how to celebrate."
A recent poll of 1,000 workers carried out by Lastminute.com found that 71 per cent still have more than half of their annual holiday entitlement to use before the end of the year.
