Brits Have Holiday Boom in January

Brits Have Holiday Boom in January Tour operators are reporting a sales surge, in what has been described as a "holiday boom" this month.

One of the UK's leading providers of discount holiday accommodation, Alpharooms.com, has reported an increase of 84 per cent in bookings compared with the same time last year.

Gareth Hockey, Alpharooms.com's online marketing manager, said: "January is traditionally a peak booking time for summer holidays, but Monday saw unprecedented levels of enquiries and bookings.

"We believe these record bookings are due to people returning to work and logging onto holiday websites to as a way to escape the post–Christmas blues."

He added that Brits are booking more holidays to tropical destinations, such as Malaysia, Mexico and the Caribbean, where they are guaranteed to get good weather.

The increase in long haul bookings was also attributed to the fall in prices for these trips as far-off countries become more accessible to Brits.

Destinations such as Dubai, Penang, Singapore and Cape Town have been hotly tipped by travel experts as 2008's most popular long haul destinations, while European favourites such as the Balearic Islands and the Spanish Costas will remain popular.
