Boost For Visitors To Burma
Potential visitors to Burma have received a boost in the shape of the Foreign Office's decision to relax its advice not to Travel to the country. It now says that caution should be exercised when visiting what is a beautiful but notoriously unstable country, but does not say that travel is altogether not advisable.
The advice reads: "You should exercise caution when travelling to border areas in Burma, particularly those close to the Thai/Burma border where there is a risk from ongoing military activity and landmines.
"The Burmese government restricts travel to most border areas and there are only a limited number of legal crossing points, which often close without notice. You should not attempt to cross borders illegally or enter restricted areas without permission from the Burmese authorities."
Burma's military junta was recently strongly criticised by chancellor Gordon Brown. The country has a poor human rights record and is believed to have around 500,000 political refugees.
