Algarve 'is Portugal's Best Kept Secret'
Those visiting Portugal have been advised to take a trip to the Algarve by one expert.
According to Independent journalist Kate Simon, this region is Portugal's "best kept secret", which boasts some old towns and hidden coves virtually unknown to tourists.
"Explore the beautiful old town of Tavira and its beach island, the hidden coves and bays west of Lagos, the windswept beaches around Sagres and the foothills of the Serra de Monchique," she wrote.
The travel writer added that in order to gain an authentic Portuguese experience, holidaymakers should avoid crowded areas such as Albufeira and the "ubiquitous manicured greens that have tamed this once wild coast", and head for more secluded locations.
Earlier this month, the Association of Independent Tour Operators advised holidaymakers that Portugal is also a great location for golfing fans.
The organisation noted that the Algarve has one of the highest concentrations of courses of anywhere in Europe and adds that many hotels have employed members of staff solely to satisfy their guests' golfing needs.
