Aldi To Start Selling Holidays
Discount retailer Aldi has announced it is to begin selling holidays.
Aldi Travel will be launched in the UK in January and will offer summer holidays, city breaks and ski deals.
The company will sell the holidays through a website and will publicise six select deals through leaflets made available in its stores each fortnight.
Aldi's Austrian chain already sells holidays and claims to be the second-largest tour operator in the country.
"We have sold a million holidays in Austria since we launched in 2003," commented Sarah Butler, Aldi group buying director.
Last month an industry insider suggested that Britons have shown a willingness to forego luxuries in order to enjoy a good-value break.
James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council, said the success of budget airline Ryanair demonstrates that passengers will go without extra comforts when they travel so that they can take advantage of low-price fares.
