Airbus Outshine Boeing At Dubai Air Show

Airbus Outshine Boeing At Dubai Air Show Plane manufacturer Airbus beat its rival Boeing on the number of orders taken during the Dubai air show.

Airbus’s orders and letters of intent amounted to $5.3 billion (£3.2 billion), compared to the $800 million that Boeing’s two orders totalled, BBC News has reported.

Commenting on the successful show by Airbus, John Leahy, chief operating officer said: “We had a good air show, better than many expected.”

However, despite the orders gained during the air show, sales at Airbus had fallen dramatically since their last pitch in 2007. In 2007, Airbus gained orders and letters of intent totalling $75 billion.

Mr Leahy said: “Our industry is not out of the woods yet. There will be a difficult winter ahead of us. But with the deals we made in Dubai and the interest in our products that we saw here, spring may not be that far away.”

Commenting on the downturn of plane orders, Mr Leahy also stated that the economic crisis globally had undoubtedly contributed. Passengers are taking fewer flights, and airlines are forced to provide cheap flights to encourage bookings which eats into available resources to buy new aircraft.

A large chunk of the orders for Airbus came from Ethiopian Airlines, whose order for 12 Airbus A350-900s is worth $2.9 billion. Airbus also managed to sell two A380 super jumbo planes.

Rival aircraft maker Boeing successfully gained orders from the Algerian government-managed Air Algerie and Tassili Airlines for 11 737-800 planes.

Dubai air show organisers commented that this year’s total for orders was $13 billion, far less than the $155 billion worth of plane orders and sales made during the show in 2007.
